HOW TO PATCH FARLAND STORY 3
--------------------------------------------

To use this translation, you must have the Japanese version of Farland Story 3. The original Floppy Disk Image (FDI) release for this game is most commonly found, but it could be that you have the game installed on a Hard Disk Image (HDI).

- If you don't have either:

Stop reading.

--------------------------------------------
- If you have an FDI version of the game:
--------------------------------------------

I STRONGLY recommend you install this game to a HDI (empty HDI included with this package). The following section is for those who enjoy swapping disks every two minutes.

---Install to FDI

You will need to replace specific files on disks A, B, C, D and E to make the translation work. To find out which files go where, look at the _contents disk A/E.txt files. The actual files to be copied can be found in the "translated files" subdirectory.

To replace the files, you need a tool that can open and edit FDI files. An easy-to-use tool that does this comes with the Anex86Ex emulator, it is called Anxdiet.exe. There are others. This file assumes you are using Anxiedit.

If you have used Anxiedit before, You know what to do, so I will assume you haven't when you are reading this. Well then. Double-click the Anxiedit icon in Explorer. Anxiedit will now ask you if it should be the default application for FDI and HDI files. Select both and quit the program (we're doing this the easy way).

Now Anxiedit is associated with FDI's. Whenever you double-click an FDI file (now recognizable by the butt-ugly grey icon), Anxiedit will start and open the FDI. Now all you have to do is drag-and-drop the translation files onto the Anxiedit window, and close it (this is important; Anxiedit does not save until you do). When you have replaced all the files on all three disks in this manner, you are done. Don't bother with the memconfig directory. You won't need it.

One more thing. Floppy disk users need a 'User Disk' to save their games. An empty User Disk has been provided in this archive. It is called "FS3 User Disk.FDI".

---Install to HDI

This part is slightly complicated. You will need to run the installer program for FS3. It will install the game onto the hard disk image. After that, patch the game, and more importantly, copy the memconfig files. Okay, here we go.

First, unrar the "08MB.rar" file that comes with this archive. Inside you will find an empty, formatted 8 MB HDI. Run Anex86ex (or an emulator of your choice). Insert 08MB.hdi into the first HDD slot, and insert disk B of FS3 into the first FDD slot. Make sure your emulator boots from HD before it boots from FD (in Anex, you can check the "HDD -> FDD" box to do this).

You will be given a DOS prompt. Type "B:" (without the quotes). Now type "hdinst". You will be taken to the installer. The installer is in Japanese, but don't worry. It's very simple. Press enter three times (to select B:, the drive to install from, then A:, this is the path where the game will be installed to, and finally FSX, the directory to install in. These choices are correct by default). Now it will ask you for confirmation. Select the LEFT choice.

Now the copying process will begin. Insert Disk A into the first FDD slot (DON'T exit the emulation! Just change the file wile the emulator is still running). Then press enter in the emulation window. The files from Disk A are now being copied. After a while the program prompts you for disk B. Insert disk B again to continue copying the files. Repeat this until the files from disk E have been copied.

You're almost done. Exit the emulator. Now patch the game with the English translation (as described below). Also, copy all the files from the memconfig subdirectory into the root of the HDI (so NOT into the FSX subdirectory). This is necessary to prevent a memory issue in stage 36.

You are done! Rename the 08MB.hdi file if you like, remove all the FDI files from the FDD slots, and start up. Have fun!

--------------------------------------------
- If you have an HDI version of the game:
--------------------------------------------

All you have to do is replace all the files on the HDI with the translated. They should all be located in the same directory, namely the directory where FS3 is installed. The procedure is the same as for floppy disks described above, except all the files go into the same directory. And make sure to not copy the FDI or RAR files. They aren't necessary, and won't fit into the HDI.
